Busch Vacuum Pumps and Systems is one of the largest Global manufacturers of vacuum pumps, blowers and compressors. Their products are at the forefront of vacuum and low pressure technology, offering the largest selection of industrial vacuum pumps available in the world today. With more than 50 years of experience and expertise in vacuum system manufacturing, Busch provide customised solutions for a variety of vacuum applications.

Founded in 1963, Busch’s primary focus is their customers. Today, with over 60 subsidiaries in more than 40 countries and sales agents in over 30 countries, they are able to provide sound advice and technical support directly at their customers' locations

The challenge

When Julian Brindley joined Busch as UK Sales Manager and candidate of Newman Stewart, he was aware that the business had significant hiring gaps that needed to be addressed. At the time the business was using a range of agencies to cover their needs, resulting in poor candidates who were a bad cultural fit for the business. Knowing the results and thorough processes undertaken in the retained search process, and having wasted 3 months on a failing recruitment strategy, Julian proposed this approach in the company’s search for 2 Area Sales Managers. Both roles would be responsible for driving significant new business as well as looking after existing clients. An understanding of the business, business goals, industry and the company’s routes to market would be crucial.

The process

Newman Stewart worked closely with Julian at Busch to agree the process, territories that would be covered, job spec, competencies and person specifications, as well as drawing up a list of potential target businesses within a similar vertical. Having worked in the process manufacturing industry for a number of years, Newman Stewart were able to utilise their extensive network to vet and shortlist a variety of potentially suitable and high performing candidates, and quickly present 6 of these to the client for each available position.


Busch was looking for Area Sales Managers who could deliver out of the gate but also fit into the team culture. They successfully filled both roles and were so impressed with the results that they continue to work with Newman Stewart on other vacant positions. Within a very short space of time the candidates were delivering significant return to the business and crucially, building pipeline.
