The client

Bekaert is a world market and technology leader in steel wire transformation and coating technologies, and strives to be the preferred supplier for their steel wire products and solutions by continuously delivering superior value to customers worldwide. Bekaert (Euronext Brussels: BEKB) is a global company with almost 30 000 employees worldwide, headquarters in Belgium and € 4.8 billion in annual revenue.

The challenge

Bridon-Berkeart approached us looking for a Sales leader to build sustainable, profitable sales growth through global commercial leadership of Oil & Gas markets throughout Europe.  This would involve lead strategy development and growth programme execution, including geographic expansion, and new selling programmes, and provide key input for development of Bridon’s global strategic business plan.

As well as the role specification, Bridon had a long list of skill requirements making this a complex search. As a senior, and very visible role, the successful candidate would need to demonstrate a proactive approach combined with excellent communication, negotiation and influencing skills, and a collaborative leadership style utilising pragmatism, commercial discipline and an ability to get hands on whilst not losing sight of the end goal. Persistence, resilience and personal credibility along with the ability to build and motivate high performing teams were also essential attributes. We were also looking for someone willing to travel outside the UK for 50% of the time.

The process

We began by writing a brief, advert and list of target companies, which were agreed with the client to ensure no conflicts. We were also able to offer a complete overview of the market, including salary comparisons, top performers and key players in the industry, the calibre of potential candidates and the relevance of candidates from different industries. After screening a number of potential candidates and selling the opportunity to them, approaches were made to the best and confidential discussions had with interested parties. Once we were satisfied that we had a strong short list of suitable candidates, they were then passed to the client for in-house interviews.
